U.S. immigration agents will be sent to Italy to help support security during the 2026 Winter Olympics, according to confirmation from a U.S. government source this week. The personnel will come from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, commonly known as ICE, and will operate in a support role tied to U.S. security needs.
According to details shared by U.S. officials, the agents will assist the State Department’s Diplomatic Security Service with protecting U.S. athletes, staff, and visiting officials during the Games. Their work is expected to focus on threat analysis and coordination related to transnational crime, not immigration enforcement or public policing.
Italian authorities will retain full control over security operations at all Olympic venues. Officials in both countries have emphasized that the ICE presence will be limited and conducted in cooperation with Italian law enforcement.
The 2026 Winter Games are scheduled to take place across northern Italy, with events hosted in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo. Planning for security is already underway as Italy prepares to host one of the world’s largest international sporting events.
